Abstract:
Reports on, provides a synthesis of, and assesses the results from the first thirty-two years of the project, which was set up `to investigate by experiment the denudation and burial of archaeological structures' and is principally concerned with two earthworks, one on Overton Down, Wiltshire, and the other on Morden Bog, near Wareham, Dorset; both have been monitored since construction in 1960 and 1963 respectively, and excavated in sections cut through them at intervals on a progressive scale of years.. The report reviews the project's history over its first thirty-two years in the particular context of excavations at Overton in 1968, 1976 and 1992 and at Wareham in 1980. The report records the more detailed programme of analytical work which was implemented at Overton in 1992, concentrating on the preservation of biological and environmental evidence and on the analysis of a range of organic and inorganic materials buried in 1960. The results provide an opportunity to consider the strengths and weakness of experimental methodology in archaeology. Includes French and German summaries; contributions include
