Abstract:
Excavations over three decades have produced a very large group of native wares and a very varied one of imported pottery. The wares are classified (five Middle Saxon wares of local make, and thirty from France and Germany) and a general review of N European pottery of 8th and 9th centuries is made in the light of the Hamwih evidence for the history of potters and pottery. Quantified data from recent excavations are presented and a seriation analysis has been performed (John F Cherry). Finally the implications for trade patterns of the period are considered. Technical appendices, eg thin sections, experimental clamp firings.
