SH 985574. The settlement consisted of at least seven rectangular hut foundations and associated enclosures. Contemporary middens produced substantial quantities of 15th-16th century pottery and metal artefacts. The site is discussed in relation to the history of transhumance farming in Wales and the Brenig Valley, and documentary and other sources are used to reconstruct the daily life of the settlement.

Discusses the royal survey of the coastal defences which records deficiencies in the garrisons, ordnance, and munitions; other matters of interest to the Crown such as the amount of timber and wood available are also dealt with.

The excavation was planned among other things to test sampling procedures for use on more complex sites. The link between the kiln and the local iron industry was also investigated, and it is suggested that the potter was French. Au(abr)

A stone-lined pit, part of the castle's Civil War defences, was filled with artefacts dating to 1645-75, including redwares, tin-glazed wares, glass vessels including chemical apparatus, clay pipes and some Scottish coins. Au(abr)

SE 337041. A 'cottage' weaving industry originally established in mid-16th century (documentary evidence) but ceasing in early 17th was found by excavation to have been revived in late 18th. Demolition had followed in the 1930s; the remains have now been conserved.

Identifications, mainly through documents, have been made of weavers' cottages, many of which show no fundamental differences from other working class dwellings of the time, though size and plan form can vary considerably. They appear important in the development of both rural and urban settlement during the Industrial Revolution in the region. See also 80/7360.
