Abstract: Presents evidence largely from the Coppergate excavations (1976--81), but also includes material from subsequent watching brief on the site, along with other excavations at 22 Piccadilly and the Bedern. Objects of amber, glass, jet, non-ferrous metal and stone are examined and discussed with regard to craft industry and trade. A summary report on `Excavation at 16--22 Coppergate' is provided by R A Hall (2455--61), while subsequent findings are noted in `The watching brief' by N F Pearson (2461--2). `Excavation at 22 Piccadilly' [1987] is described by R Finlayson (2462--3) and `Excavations at the College of Vicars Choral at the Bedern' [1973--80] are reported on by R A Hall (2463--5). `The conservation and identification of the finds' is discussed by J A Spriggs (2466--74), with a contributions on `Jet and amber' (2469--70) and `Jet and amber identification and provenancing' (2470--4) by I Panter. The following specialist contributions are incorporated: a discussion of the lithology of the hones by G D Gaunt (2484--5); `Amber working tools and techniques' by I Panter (2501--3); `Glass manufacturing evidence' by J Bayley & R Doonan (2519--28); `Stone spindle whorls' by P Walton Rogers (2529 & 2530--33); `Glass vessels' by M Stiff (2537--41); A comment on a silver stud is by M E Hutchinson (2554); and `Fossils' by G D Gaunt (2602--4).
