Abstract
Romano-British and later reclamations on the Severn salt marshes in the Elmore area, Gloucestershire
John R L Allen
Michael G Fulford
17 - 32
Evidence from cultural debris, including iron-making residues, the disposition of sea defences, the general elevation of the enclosed areas, and the differences of elevation measured across the seabanks to modern marshes, all indicate the reclamation of approximately 350 hectares of tidal wetlands during the later Roman period. There is also evidence for Late Saxon and medieval to early modern activity on the reclaimed wetlands. Au(adp)
The Lypiatt Cross
Richard Bryant
33 - 52
A reassessment detailing arguments which support an early-eighth century AD date. Descriptions of the figures on the cross allow a possible iconographic interpretation to be made and parallels to be drawn with the early Northumbrian crosses, especially Bewcastle. Its current relationship to later manorial and parish boundaries may indicate that it still stands in its original position. A final section by Michael Hare (46--9) deals with `The minster status of Bisley'. Au(adp)
A survey of St James's church, Lancaut, Gloucestershire
Charles Parry
53 - 103
A survey was undertaken in 1986 prior to consolidation in 1987--88. The church once contained a lead font dating to c AD 1130--40, now housed in Gloucester Cathedral. The earliest surviving part can be dated no earlier than the late-twelfth or early-thirteenth century. The church has undergone almost total reconstruction since then, perhaps partly during late medieval times, but mostly during the post-medieval period. There are two appendices, `Decorated stone' (95--8) and `Chemical analysis of types 2, 3, and 2/3 mortars' by J Evans & C Parry (98--101). Au(adp)
