A brief review of the Viking Ships exhibition held at the National Museum of Ireland early in 1999.

Considers the wider significance of a number of recent discoveries, incorporating descriptions of examples from four sites (contributed by their excavators): `Archaeologists discover Neolithic settlement in Tralee' by Lar Dunne & Jacinta Kiely (14); `Neolithic houses at Corbally, Kilcullen, Co Kildare' by Avril Purcell (15); `The Neolithic house at Enagh, Co Derry' by Cormac McSparran (16); and `Possible Neolithic house at Inch, Downpatrick, Co Down' by Ciara McManus (16).

Describes the survey techniques employed as part of a multi-national investigation in the vicinity of Hindwell, where there is a diversity of prehistoric remains and a Roman fort.

Reports on the findings of a programme of excavation and survey on the Burren, Co Clare, where conditions have favoured the preservation of settlement remains and field walls as well as megalithic tombs.

A brief introduction to the Northern Irish programme for mapping wreck sites, which is being undertaken by the Coastal Research Group of the University of Ulster, Coleraine. Illustrated with sonograph images of three of the sites surveyed so far.

Records on the results of geophysical survey, which has revealed part of large enclosure between the Banqueting Hall and Ráith na Ríg. The new feature is thought to be a hengiform enclosure, most likely dating from the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age. Other features revealed include three ring-ditches, possibly the remains of round barrows or houses
