Abstract
Flint Castle, Clwyd: excavations to the west of the castle, 1988
Hugh R Hannaford
0 - 3
These excavations demonstrated that the outer ward had once extended west of the castle and was probably accompanied by a moat and revetment wall, but this cannot be traced in its entirety.
The Old Bull Inn and Hanbury Arms; a survey of two Caerleon pubs
Paul R Davis
0 - 2
The Old Bull Inn originated as an early-sixteenth-century hall house with lateral fireplace, oriel and gallery. In c 1700 and upper floor and staircase were added and early windows repositioned. A rear kitchen wing was added in the early-seventeenth century. The Hanbury comprises a sixteenth-century hall and parlour with lateral chimney to which an outer room was added in the early or mid-seventeenth century. Other modifications have included heightening the building and the addition and modification of certain windows.
Excavations at St. Mary's Swansea 1976-77
S H Sell
1 - 16
Two nearby sites in central Swansea, both adjacent to a known medieval structure and unaffected by later disturbances, were excavated. Area one provided evidence for a walled garden, behind which ran an unmetalled alleyway; in the post medieval period a series of linked tanks (interpreted as part of a brewery, stood on the site.) Area two was more complex with traces of walls, yards, an ornamental pavement made from millstones and pebbles overlying medieval floors, walls and occupation debris. The possible location of a medieval hospitium, known to have stood hereabout, is also discussed. Finds of medieval and post medieval pottery, iron and bone work are described.
Vegetational history and environmental setting of Crawcwellt, Gwynedd
Frank M Chambers
Jonathan G A Lageard
3 - 5
Palynological analysis shows a change from spectra dominated by arboreal pollen (mainly alder) to spectra with sedges and grasses. The change from woodland to grassland seems to have occurred in the late prehistoric period.
Capel Spon, Buckley, Clwyd
J R Cole
Derrick Pratt
3 - 5
Evidence recovered by excavation on a site long associated with `Spon chapel' is presented in conjunction with recent historical research, placing the life of a small, medieval religious foundation in its political and economic contexts.
Radiocarbon date for a Fengate sherd from Brynderwen, Llandyssil, Powys
Alex M Gibson
4 - 5
It is proposed that an increasing number of securely associated radiocarbon dates for Peterborough ware have been suggesting the genesis of the style in the fourth millennium, or earlier Neolithic, and not in the later Neolithic.
Survey and excavation work on the line of the Annell Leat at Dolaucothi
Barry C Burnham
Helen Burnham
6 - 19
Description of recent work on one of the two known leats to have supplied water to the series of tanks and reservoirs above the gold mine workings. The sources of water, the location of the surviving stretches of leat, the nature of the leat and the presence and structure of one (perhaps two) tanks are all considered.
