Abstract
Cardigan Island, Y Ferwig
P Bewers
3 - 6
Report of a tacheometric survey of two enclosures on Cardigan Island. A short gazetteer of other sites on the island and suggestions for future work, including geophysical survey, are also included.
The excavation of a cairn at Great Pale, Eglwyscummin, Carms.
G Williams
W John
7 - 12
Report of the excavation of a small, low cairn which lies on the edge of an extensive cairn field. Radiocarbon dating of charcoal suggested a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date for the cairn. The relatively elaborate nature of the cairn is taken to imply that it had a ritual function, as opposed to an origin as a clearance cairn.
Early mines in Wales again: a reply to Budd et al 1992
C Stephen Briggs
13 - 15
The note by Budd et al (see 93/1008) is thought to include fundamental inaccuracies of fact and important misrepresentations of opinion.
Langstone Court Motte, Monmouthshire: excavations by Leslie Alcock, 1964
Kevin Blockley
Paul Courtney
17 - 25
Report of an excavation of a single cutting from the top of the motte, across a silted ditch and an adjacent counterscarp bank. The castle had originally been built of clay, presumably with a timber superstructure. A later stone structure, which was partially robbed out, is thought to have been part of a shell keep. Paul Courtney reports on both the historical background to the site, and the pottery finds.
Excavations outside St. Mary's Church, Tenby
George Williams
Dee F M Brennan
26 - 29
Recent salvage excavations beyond the west end of the church revealed a substantial structure, probably the remains of a porch, which posed considerable problems of interpretation particularly in relationship to documentary evidence. A note on the pottery, floor and ridge tile by D Brennan is appended.
Pentyrch Ironworks, Mid Glamorgan
M Lawler
30 - 32
The site of the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century ironworks lies on the west bank of the Taff Gorge. It was one of two early ironworks established here; a single furnace at Tongwynlais lay a little further downstream. Of particular interest is the early date of origin of both sites, which were in operation by the mid sixteenth century and were thus probably the two earliest blast furnaces in Glamorgan. The main part of the article comprises a short historical account and a description of the site.
