Reports excavations in 1991 ahead of housing development. The court tomb was destroyed sometime in the late-nineteenth or early-twentieth century. Finds included plain and decorated Neo pottery and a small lithic assemblage including the first recorded instance of Arran pitchstone in a funerary context. A secondary EBA pit burial consisting of an inverted plain vase urn was also uncovered. D G Moore reports `Flint and stone' (16--17) and J L Wilkinson reports the `Skeletal remains' (17--18). Appendix 1 (19) notes a Mid Neo radiocarbon date from context 357 wood charcoal.

A review of the saddle quern in Ireland, with particular reference to saddle querns from excavated contexts.

A summary of research conclusions from work in the mid-1980s into the excavated evidence for the design of houses in Early Christian Ireland, their relationship to settlements in which they are found and to other types of structures. The phenomenon of a change in house form during this period is revisited and conclusions emerge about the nature and chronology of the enclosed and unenclosed sites in which houses of this period have been found.

The excavations revealed the presence of primary archaeological deposits which probably date to the pre-castle period (pre-1400), when the area was used as a fording point across the River Erne. These were overlain by occupation deposits associated with two ditch features. The earlier ditch appears to be the remains of a natural stream which, along with the Erne, encircled a small island on which the castle would be built. In c. 1607 the castle was refurbished and repaired, the curtain wall constructed with the distinctive water gate and wooden house constructed in the English fashion. It is likely that at this time the defensive ditches were recut, both the moat, and to the east, the natural stream bed. Specialist reports comprise the `Historical background' by Frank Myles (121--8), and `Leather report' by Daire O'Rourke (133). Appendix 1 provides a features list (136--7) and Appendix 2 a finds list (138--43).

This paper details survey and excavations undertaken within the castle grounds as part of a project to recreate a late-seventeenth to early-eighteenth-century formal garden. It is thought to be the first `Garden Archaeology' project undertaken in NI. Pathways, ponds and other garden features were examined in an effort to provide an accurate reconstruction of the formal garden layout.
