Abstract
Ecclesiastical Exemption, an outdated anachronism
Christopher Stell
75 - 76
In the face of increasing examples of historically important church fittings and furnishings being altered or removed by their local custodians, the editor challenges the Exemption, illustrating his argument with the case of Salisbury's Methodist Chapel whose exterior is listed but whose interior has recently been totally gutted (see also 93/26 & 93/612).
Ecclesiastical Exemption, the case for retention
Kenneth Street
77 - 79
Puts forward the Methodist standpoint in support of the Exemption, arguing that in general its operation has better conservation results than would its absence. Trustees should be allowed to adapt their buildings to serve the needs of new generations, and should not have to use funds to preserve a building which they feel is no longer fulfilling that function (see also 93/24 & 93/612).
