Abstract
The discovery of a Roman coin hoard at Salem, Trefeurig, Aberystwyth
Jeffrey L Davies
Toby Driver
1 - 4
In May of 1998 a chance single coin find of a base metal issue of Quintillus (AD270) led to the discovery of a further forty-seven Roman coins. All are base metal antoniniani dating to between Gallienus (AD260--68) and Carausius (AD287--93) and are badly corroded -- there is a `Schedule of coins' by E Besly & J L Davies (2). It cannot be judged whether they represent the whole or a part of the hoard and no container of any form was recovered. It is thought they were deposited sometime in the last decade of the third century AD and a full report is planned for an edition of the journal Studia Celtica.
Recent finds from Ceredigion
Nicola Hancox
5 - 17
Twenty-seven stone (spindlewhorls, maceheads, axehammers etc) and two bronze (half flanged axe and socketed axe) items in the possession of or lent to Ceredigion Museum, Aberystwyth are published here for the first time. They are not included in the Cardiganshire County History (1995) because most wereundated, though are presumed prehistoric, and others have come to light since publication.
William Ritson Coultart and the Llanerchaeron billiard room
Caroline Plamer
Ross Laidlaw
43 - 45
Llanerchaeron mansion, a John Nash villa (designed circa 1792 and now in the custodianship of the National Trust), acquired a billiards room sometime around 1843. The architect of this extension was previously unknown but a one-off payment from Major John Lewis (owner) of £20 to a Mr Coultart is seen as indicating William Ritson Coultart (contemporary and local architect) as its designer.
