n.a. (2007). Archaeology from the Wetlands.

This article primarily draws upon surveys conducted by the Irish Archaeological and Wetland Unit (IAWU) since 1990 in the commercially exploited raised bogs of the Irish midlands. Despite the importance of these surveys it is apparent that they do not address the full range of wetlands in the region. The paper then considers the role of wetlands in these landscapes and incorporates an examination of the known dryland and wetland evidence that give the region its unique character.

This article examines a cache of 131 wooden artefacts recovered from Muckerstown, County Meath. These artefacts were not found in association with other cultural material but a radiocarbon date indicates that they date from the Middle Bronze Age (1520-1310 cal BC). Suggestions for possible function of the artefacts are investigated with suggestions that they feed back into traditional woodwork crafts and the underlying understanding of woodmanship and woodland management.

This article investigates the large expanse of blanket peat in the British Isles at Caithness Plain, north-east Scotland. It has often been assumed that prehistoric farming communities retreated when the peat started to spread across the landscape. However, it has also been suggested that the farmers could have controlled the advance of the peat through repeated cultivation. This model is tested through the examination of sediment stratigraphies, which indicate that there was not a reduction in activity in the early first millennium BC, but that the pollen record does indicate that crop-growing was not a significant component of agricultural practices after around 3000 Cal BP. It is suggested that local abandonment may have eventually occurred between 2100 and 1400 Cal BP.
