Abstract: |
A survey of former monastic buildings adapted to other uses following the Dissolution. An introduction is followed by discussion of the early adaptations and remodelling; conversion into high status dwellings; the suitability of particular types and layouts of monastic building for conversion; and conclusions that may be drawn from the survey. The greater part of the book consists of a detailed catalogue of converted monastic buildings in Hertfordshire, including the history, archaeological, cartographic, documentary and pictorial evidence for each, and a description of the buildings themselves. |
