Abstract: |
The remains of 416 individuals were rescued from the wind-eroded burial ground in relation to four strata ranging between AD 1500 and 1850 in date. Over half were juveniles and about a quarter below five years. Possible causes of the high child mortality and of the adult deaths are neonatal tetanus, smallpox, and skeletal TB. Seven adults showed spinal injuries probably caused by heavy work, and the arduous life probably contributed to the osteoarthritis and spondylosis observed. Root surface caries was marked in the over 35s, probably secondary to periodontal disease. Mean statures were obtained from femurs. A chapel at the centre of the site, exposed in 1971, may be 13th century in date. Radiocarbon and other dating evidence suggests 1500-1550 as the date of engulfment of the chapel. Au(abr) |
