Abstract: |
This is the first of a projected series of eight volumes, to appear quarterly, simply to introduce a massive new body of material. Sixteen contributors provide articles ranging from I C Walker and P K Wells' survey of marked pipes in Eastern England to small excavated collections. Documentary studies of pipemakers are provided for Norwich, Stamford, and Lincolnshire; the statistical analysis of Nottingham pipes has continued; and new county lists of makers are provided for Derbys-Leics-Notts-Warks-Worcs, augmenting the Oswald material. There is a study of Lincolnshire pipemakers one of York pipes and their makers, and a typology of Hull pipes, together with numerous site reports. Contributors in addition to Walker and Wells are - S Lawrence G Watkins, A J White, A C Comrie, R C Alvey, R R Laxton, G F Paechter, S Muldoon, S Taylor, W R Gault, M Karshner, A Oswald, and J Hassall. |
