The principal paper in this collection is the study of Chester pipes by J A Rutter and P J Davey (pp 41-272); other contributions deal with pipes and their manufacture in Dunfermline; Dumfries and Galloway; Hartlepool; N Wales; Staffordshire; Wiltshire; Exeter and Poole; and Tong Castle Shropshire. Two more general papers deal with the distribution of pipes round their place of manufacture, and the dating and typology of pipes bearing the royal arms. It is suggested that bowls will usually be more helpful for dating than stem bores.
