Abstract: |
The editor points out that this set of papers points up two problems in Britain: the lack of properly excavated pipe sequences (and official policy is partly at fault here) and the lack of agreed recording and publishing procedures, especially for makers' marks. The two kilns reported are Aldgate (Alan Thompson, pp 3-13) and Brentford (Alison Laws & Adrian Oswald, 15-65). David Higgins provides a survey of Surrey pipes (189-293). Richard Le Cheminant provides a series of short papers on new types and varieties (87-126) and a longer one on pipes from London foreshore deposits and inland dumps (127-72); Stephen Walker writes two papers, on material from Southwark and from Lambeth (173-88); and other contributions come from E & B Jarzembowski (79-85) and Adrian Oswald & Deirdre Le Faye (67-78). |
