Abstract: |
About 2000 enamelled items were examined, covering the period 200 BC to AD 700. (Illustrations are of general types only, not specific pieces.) Techniques, development, chronology, organization and areas of the industry are considered and some experiments with millefiori making were conducted. There was no 3rd century break in manufacture, but a fresh start was made after the sub-Roman period. A system for accurate description of enamelwork is proposed and a glossary provided. |
