Abstract:		 Describes the methodology used and the geological sequence of the area before presenting the evidence and interpreting it. The study has emphasized the importance of raised beach deposits (eg Slindon, Brighton); in general the sequence is not dissimilar to that in other parts of Britain, though it has some individual features. Research needs now: sites offering primary evidence; a test of the possible Earlier Acheulian; MTA associations; and rockshelter sites.
