Abstract: |
The area treated is S Humberside, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, E Derbyshire and the bulk of the work is a site gazetteer. Evidence for distinctive Iron Age pottery styles is reviewed and hillforts, settlements, industries, and coinage are discussed. For the Roman civitas there is consideration of the military occupation (especially Longthorpe), new air photographic evidence, the civitas and its communications, small towns and their functions, villas and native rural sites, industrial evidence, and pagan shrines. The Late Roman period is discussed with reference to incoming Anglo-Saxon influences, the degree of Romanization is assessed, and future research lines suggested. |
