Abstract: |
The kilns are studied in relation to each other and to others elsewhere in Britain, and the scale of the New Forest industry is compared with that of other kiln groups. A corpus is provided of all the known pottery types in New Forest fabrics, most of which are unpublished, and a summary of the dating evidence for each type is given (with particular reference to the Lankhills and Portchester excavations). Development and decline of the industry is considered in relation to economic and social factors. |
