The Commission is celebrating its centenary year. It was set up in 1908 to make an inventory of the ancient and historic monuments of Scotland and this is what it continues to do. Public engagement will be a particular feature of the celebrations and this will build on existing initiatives such as Scotland's rural past.
Colliery tops poll of most treasured place

As part of its centenary project, Treasured Places, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland conducted an online public vote. The winner was the Lady Victoria Colliery in Newtongrange, Midlothian, which was opened in 1890 and is now home to the Scottish Mining Museum.

A long-term study of the archaeology and history of the area has been set up by the Department of Archaeology at the University of Glasgow. The area is famous for its extensive concentration of prehistoric cropmarks and documentary references to a Pictish royal site in the ninth cemetery. Excavations to date has included examination of a massive Neolithc timber enclosure and a Pictish cemetery.
