Abstract: Excavations at Beddington in 1981--7 uncovered extensive archaeological remains. The earliest features identified were a co-axial arrangement of three ditches dated to the Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age, which is part of a wider landscape of fields. Interpretation of the material assemblage indicates that there was occupation on the site at this time, but thereafter it appears to have been unoccupied until the third century BC, when a Late Iron Age enclosed settlement developed which appeared to have had associations with west Kent and to be involved in the production and working of textiles. The settlement appears to have been replaced by fields in the first and second centuries AD, but finds suggest that occupation near the site continued, and that there were villa-type buildings in the vicinity at this time; several burials may have been associated with these. Buildings forming part of a definite villa complex were established at the site in the late-second century AD and included a villa house, bathhouse and five other buildings, two of which were barns, although there was no direct evidence of crop or livestock production. In the late-third century AD the villa house was renovated, with the addition of two wings, one of which incorporated a channelled hypocaust. The bathhouse was modified and the barns were replaced by a substantial aisled structure which used post-pads to support load-bearing timber posts. The fields seem to have become obsolete at this time. Unlike many other villa sites there is no evidence for continued occupation in the post-Roman to Early Saxon period, despite the proximity of an Early Saxon cemetery to the south. The buildings appear to have been systematically demolished in the early-fifth century AD and the site left unoccupied until the present. Includes French and German summaries; separately authored reports include
