Archaeol S Yorkshire

A project undertaken by Bolsterstone Local History Group with the University of Sheffield aimed to establish whether or not Bolsterstone had ever had a castle. Following geophysical survey, excavations revealed evidence of medieval occupation, including a building that seemed to have formed the corner of a high-status residential complex, perhaps a fortified manor house. However, many questions remain to be answered. LD

Essential repairs to a former glasshouse, a Scheduled Monument, allowed a suite of archaeological investigations to be carried out, both to improve understanding of the site's development and use and to inform future management plans. Work included the re-excavation of 1980s trenches, recording of the standing building and archaeomagnetic and luminescence dating. LD

which reports on an evaluation and subsequent excavation in advance of works. Evidence for a possible Romano-British trackway was revealed, as well as an Anglo-Saxon cemetery in use from the 7th century. LD

which reports on the detailed analysis of material recovered from a large excavation site in 1993-4. A sequence of deposits dating principally from the 13th to 16th centuries had been revealed. Significant finds included portions of two reused medieval clinker-built boats and a collection of pottery that formed a type-series for the town. LD
