Abstract: Five major and several minor sites were excavated, to reveal: Roman buildings of 2nd to 4th centuries and a Roman riverside road; unexpected Anglian occupation in Paragon Street and a fresh layout of Anglo-Scandinavian properties in Skeldergate; a good medieval building sequence near Skeldergate with constant property boundaries; the church and cemetery of St Helen-on-the-Walls (Aldwark - ?10th century to 1550); the 17th century mansion of the second Duke of Buckingham (Bishophill); and post-medieval properties near Skeldergate and in Bedern.
