Abstract
Charles Roach Smith and his museum of London antiquities
D Kidd
105 - 135
Documents the history of the 5000-piece collection of objects recorded during building operations and its final acquisition, after vigorous debate, by the British Museum in 1856. Its chronological range is 3rd millennium BC to post-medieval, and it includes all manner of types from flints to jewellery and leather shoes. Biographical details of Roach Smith are given and due heed paid to his recognition of the potential value of the artefacts he was rescuing and his attempts to educate people in the uses of archaeology.
The Savernake horn
Richard Camber
John F Cherry
201 - 211
Outlines some of the principal problems noted in preliminary research on this elephant tusk horn with its silver gilt and enamel mountings. The core may be S Italian make of 12th or 13th century; the mounts were added in the second quarter of 14th century in England. The baldric is associated with the Randolph Earls of Moray and was attached to the horn by 1604, but incorporates a hookplate from an earlier baldric.
