Abstract:
Nine trenches were excavated in advance of the flood attenuation scheme (balancing pond). The evaluation has revealed that the northern part of the development area, centred on Trench 1, contains significant, regionally important remains. These remains are generally well preserved and are likely to represent part of a medieval settlement that has been identified through excavation immediately to the north of the development area. A further concentration of activity was recorded in the central part of the development area, centred on Trenches 5 and 6. It consisted of possible enclosure and boundary ditches and pits that contained material of Roman date. The remainder of the trenches contained linear features which form part of a medieval or post-medieval field system. No significant archaeological remains were found in the southern area (represented by Trenches 7, 8 and 9) and the northern central area (represented by Trenches 2, 3 and 4) of the development area.
