Abstract:
Between October 5th and November 4th 2005 ASC Ltd undertook an evaluation of land to the west of Willen Road adjacent to the M1 at Newport Pagnell. An area of 18 ha was evaluated on behalf of SGS Construction Ltd, in advance of a proposed gravel quarry on behalf of SGS Construction Ltd. Archaeological trial trenches comprising a 5% sample of the area. A concentration of occupation dating from at least the late pre-Roman Iron Age to 4th century AD was present on the west side of the site. It comprised a series of ditched enclosures containing pits, gullies, construction slots, post-holes and a possible pond. At least three potential circular structures were identified though no occupation horizons or floor surfaces survived. Occasional fragments of quernstone and animal bone suggests a mixed agrarian economy. The range of finds suggests a native Romano-British settlement which could be classified as being somewhere between an extended family farmstead and small village. A circular ditch, probably indicating the presence of a ring ditch (ploughed out prehistoric burial mound) was present southeast of the enclosures. During the post-Roman period the site was under open field cultivation and traces of ridge and furrow are present, particularly in the southern part of the site. In the post-medieval period the area was sub-divided into individual fields belonging to Caldecote Farm which lies to the east of Willen Road.
