Abstract: |
In January 2005 Birmingham Archaeology carried out an historic environment study of an area in Birmingham''s Eastside bounded by Digbeth, Allison Street, Well Lane and Park Street (here after referred to as the study area). The work was commissioned by Birmingham City Council in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the area. The study adhered to a written scheme of investigation (Birmingham Archaeology 2005), which was itself based on a brief produced by Birmingham City Council (2004). Orwell Passage probably preserves part of the line of an early watercourse that was in use during the 12th century. The watercourse formed the rear boundary of boundaries of plots fronting Digbeth. The existing buildings are mid 19th to mid 20th century in date, but lie within plots whose boundaries preserve the line of medieval property boundaries. |
