Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in December 2006 at120-146, Stewarts Road, Battersea, London Borough of Wandsworth, on behalf of RGP Architects and Kator Storage Ltd. The aim of the evaluation was to assess the impact of the proposed development on any surviving archaeological remains. The evaluation comprised the machine excavation of six trenches, 5 nº measuring 2m x 2m and 1nº measuring 8m x 4m. Two trenches (5 and 6) were heavily contaminated by diesel and oils which are bi-products of the industrial buildings which previously occupied the site. The remaining trenches contained a sequence of natural deposits. The lowest, recorded at -3.86mOD, was London clay overlain by terrace gravels. This in turn was covered by an alluvial deposit and finally a 2.50m thick deposit of peat. These deposits form a stratigraphic sequence dating from the Late Pleistocene possibly through to the Iron Age. All trenches were covered by modern made ground and concrete. No significant archaeological remains or residual finds were identified in the trenches.
