Abstract:
An archaeological building recording was carried out prior to the redevelopment of a group of buildings, which was to include the demolition of those in a particularly poor condition. The earliest element of the site comprised a pair of cottages, probably built in the 18th century, which were subsequently knocked together and used as a pie factory. A row of cottages was subsequently built against the original two, although only one of these, in a very poor condition, remained. The third building was probably a coach house, and was built in the 1850s. Despite their subsequent alteration and considerable deterioration the pair of cottages retained a large number of original features of interest, particularly on the upper floors, including stud partition walls and re-used timbers in the trusses. The coach house also retained many original features, while the smaller cottages were in too poor a condition to easily access. The group of buildings as a whole, however, offered a rare opportunity to examine lower status housing in Kendal.
