Abstract: |
As the result of an archaeological condition on planning consent for the conversion to residential use of the milking parlour of the former dairy at Lockley Farm, Welwyn, Herts., the Heritage Network was commissioned to create a record of the building. The brick and flint milking parlour was built in the mid 19th century, and was extended in the early part of the 20th century to provide almost double the number of milking stalls. Lockley Farm originally formed part of the Lockleys Estate and was built around two 17th century timber framed barns which now border the courtyard. The inclusion of a dairy as part of the farmstead provides clear evidence of the diversification in farming during this period and follows a pattern of changing farming practice seen elsewhere in the region. |
