Abstract: |
This survey aims to record the early industries and industrial infrastructure of the district of Redcar and Cleveland using first (1857) and second edition (1895) Ordnance Survey maps for identification purposes. The results are represented in a gazetteer. Given the nature of the cartographic evidence the gazetteer gives very basic descriptive information, attempts to provide a baseline interpretation of the features and comment on their development through time. As well as describing the original resource and infrastructure the project attempts to indicate where 19th century industrial features survive and provide an assessment of their condition. This will be used to target future conservation and interpretation projects. |
