Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was conducted by John Moore Heritage Services on land adjacent to, and north of Gossway Fields, Kirtlington. During the excavation a system of 2nd -4th century Roman fields were recorded. Encroaching on these was a series of later 3rd and 4th century pits. A building with stone foundations believed to be part of a late Roman villa or higher status farmstead with an associated well was also recorded. One small pit containing human cremation believed to be Roman was recorded. At least two, possibly three, Anglo-Saxon sunken featured buildings were located with a contemporary stone lined well. While the activity could be of 5th century, a 6th century date is more likely. A small assemblage of Neolithic flint-work was also recovered.
