Abstract: |
Initial inspection of the site revealed a short cist had been partially disturbed by the developers. The bulk of the skeletal remains contained within the cist had been removed by the attending police officer and passed to the relevant authorities. Further excavation of the cist under archaeological conditions recovered a small disc-shaped perforated cannel coal artefact along with further bone fragments from within the fill of the cut of the cist. A second cist in poor condition was found to contain the remains of two inhumations. A programme of radiocarbon dating of the human bone revealed three distinct dates. The sampled bone from the initial cist recorded a date of 2340-2120 BC. The dates of two of the bones from the second cist proved surprising with the initial inhumation producing a date of 2030-1750 BC and the second date being much later at 930-800 BC. |
