Abstract:
AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned by Dawn Group to undertake a programme of archaeological works on a proposed housing development at Craig Hill, Fairlie, North Ayrshire. The objective of this work was to inform a planning application in respect to the scale and significance of any archaeological material that may have survived with the proposed development area. The need for and scope of these archaeological works was determined by the West of Scotland Archaeology Service (WoSAS), the archaeological advisors to North Ayrshire Council. A 10% sample of the c.9 ha area equated to trenching totalling 9000 m2. After on site consultation with WoSAS the presence of numerous live services within the site, bunded material, steep slopes and quarrying activities resulted in reduction of the area opened. In total 52 trenches totaling 7375m2 were excavated during the course of the evaluation. The greenfield site proved to be mostly archaeologically sterile with very few features or artefactual material uncovered by the evaluation works. No definitive remains relating to the Chapel or enclosure sites were uncovered during the evaluation.
