Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the construction of an extension to the existing building. A total of 41 articulated skeletons and a large quantity of disarticulated human remains were excavated. The exact date of these burials is unknown though an iron knife found with one may be Anglo Saxon and some burials were truncated by the insertion of buttresses for the tower which are believed to be 13th century. Post medieval archaeological features were identified, including a Victorian soak-away, boiler clinker deposits relating to the boiler house, and the remains of a small post-medieval building, possibly relating to the late 19th century church restoration. A pit containing in-situ burning may also be medieval in date. A modern roof tile deposit and test pit were identified. |
