Abstract: |
A trench evaluation and subsequent excavation was carried out in advance of the construction of a food store. The development area was the site of the former Exeter workhouse, built in the early 18th century, and also lies close to one of the main routes into the Roman and medieval town. A total of 17 trenches were excavated, which demonstrated negligable survivial of the workhouse remains. A ditch containing burnt clay (including possible foundry waste) and Roman pottery was identified, and further investigated during localised excavations. |
