Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out on improvement works to the drainage on the north side of St Saviours Church immediately to the west of the main entrance. This work was required by Diocese as a condition of Faculty. The excavation of a new service trench extending from the north wall of the church to the within c 1m of the churchyard wall was monitored. It avoided an existing (now disused) soak-away and connected the drainage into the main services in the road. Excavation of the new service trench exposed the eastern end of a brick lined burial vault at a depth of approximately 270mm. It comprised a lining of red brick bonded with lime mortar, capped by slate flagstones. This tomb is likely to be of mid 19th century date. No other features or deposits were observed. |
