Abstract: |
Twenty one evaluation trenches were excavated on the western side of the former factory site prior to its redevelopment. The site was used as farmland before the Border Counties Chemical and Manure Works was built by William Crabb in around 1871, and the Solway Chemical Manure Works was built adjacent in 1878 by John and William Maxwell. The Maxwell's bought Crabb's factory in 1899, and this business became the Fisons Fertilizer Factory in the 20th century. The only features found were a modern platform for the manager's house, deposits of made ground and modern services. No significant finds were found and no environmental samples were taken. |
