Abstract: |
An open-cut trench aligned N-S east of the centre line on Aldersgate Street was observed on the 5th-8th of February 2011. It measured approximately 12.78m long x between 0.36-0.66m wide and up to 1.18m deep. Significant remains associated with the 17th century rebuilding of Aldersgate were exposed and recorded during groundworks. These included structural elements of the gate itself as well as associated surface deposits. Masonry [3]-[4] could represent the south-east corner of a room adjacent to the eastern pedestrian arch of the Gate with a tiled floor. Walls [6]-[8] would more likely be associated with domestic properties immediately adjacent to the gate on St.Martin's-le-Grand, as it is on a different alignment, reflecting the kink in the road depicted in early maps. Deposits (9), (10), (12), and (14) probably represented episodes of dumping during the construction and occupation of the site and context (11) demolition and sealing of the site post 1762. After archaeological investigation and recording the remains were left in situ. |
