Abstract: |
In January and February 2011, Archaeological Solutions Limited conducted historic building recording at 49 Woollards Lane in Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire. The work was commissioned was undertaken as a condition attached to planning consent, and included the recording of three buildings on the site. The three buildings comprised a former school building, constructed in 1870, a probable domestic residence of fairly humble status, of early to mid-19th century date and a modest, modern commercial premises. The school building had a limited life, and was later converted to a motor garage, leaving its outline intact despite remodelling. The smaller, former cottage was sterilised of earlier features during modernisation in the 1960s, but preserved its 19th century timber core and is a fairly unusual and late example of timber construction. The small commercial building was not fully available for examination. |
