Abstract: |
Level 3 building record of Grade II-Listed workhouse built by Foden and Henman based on the Sampson Kempthore hexagonal and cruciform designs. Most of the original buildings survive (hub, entrance range, accommodation ranges, infirmary) plus later outbuildings, chapel, laundry and mortuary. The plan-form and exteriors are well-preserved but the interiors have suffered through hospital conversion in the 1930s (St Albright's), fire and neglect. Its plan from is unique, the accommodation wings adopting a saltire cross form between an octagonal hub and outbuilding range, with entrance range and infirmary at either end. |
