Abstract:

An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Pre-Construct Archaeology on landscaping works at Hare Court, Inner Temple, City of London, London EC4. These works involved the excavation of 20 trenches to accomodate the introduction of tree pits, planting beds, a statue base and a new path. The earliest archaeology revealed consisted of a mortar surface which had been truncated by a later pit containing pottery dated from 1270-1500. The majority of the archaeology related to the 16th-17th centuries and the presence of lawyers on the site and took the form of dump layers, gravel yard surfaces, domestic waste pits and rubble horizons. The 18th-19th centuries was represented by disused service pipe trenches, a brick wall and a brick drainage system.
