Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the construction of a new extension to the rear of Clare House Surgery. The property lies within the historic core of the town and was constructed in the early 19th century. It was extended in the later 19th century and in the 1920s or 1930s converted into a surgery. The Town Leat, now culverted, runs through its grounds. The watching brief has shown that there was a considerable depth of garden soil, demolition material and made ground extending across the site, which probably dates to the late 19th-century alterations to the house or to the conversion of the property into the present surgery. Below these deposits there were a number of possible archaeological features. Although un-dated, these features may relate to 18th/19th-century gardening activity, possibly the planting of trees. There was no evidence of earlier activity, or conclusive evidence for an early line of the leat.
