Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for development as a marina with fishing lakes. The site lies between the village of Cherry Willingham and the north bank of the River Witham. Three Bronze Age round barrows and a possible associated Iron Age square barrow have been identified on the site, in an alignment along a relict bank of the River Witham; Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flint has been found on top of the relict river bank on the site. The barrows are part of a group of five or six, believed to be associated with the Washingborough Barrow Cemetery on the opposite bank of the modern Witham. Individual Bronze and Iron age artefacts, possibly ritual deposits, have been retrieved throughout the area, and excavations at Washingborough Pumping Station, some 300m from the proposed development, indicated Bronze-Iron Age settlement in the area. Roman material has been found along the course of the Witham, whose course is paralleled throughout the study area by the Roman Car Dyke canal, and a Romano-British settlement has been excavated in a field to the north of the site. Undated cropmarks on the site may be associated with this settlement. It was concluded that Romano-British remains might be found on the site, although they would be the hinterland of the settlement. The existence of significant prehistoric remains was beyond question, but the landowner has already carried out machine excavations in this area, and the remains are probably severely truncated. Further archaeological work was recommended. |
