Abstract: |
A programme of historic building recording was undertaken on the site of Braefield Precision Engineering prior to demolition of the factory as part of the redevelopment of the site as a residential care home. During World War 2, the factory was used by 'Ediswan' to manufacture radio valves and light bulbs. The pillbox formed part of a secondary defence line stretching from Cambridge to Bishop's Stortford and may also have been used as a 'factory roof-spotter's post'. Although not listed, the importance of the pillbox is recognised by English Heritage as Monument 1422487 in its National Monuments Record. |
