Abstract: |
EH Level II record of public house and associated buildings during residential conversion. The main building is Listed and likely to date to the 16th-century or perhaps slightly earlier. It is postulated there was a guildhall in the vicinity, and it is certainly high status, with a detached rear service wing. Braced timber frame, jettied, bridle scarf joint, heavy jowls to bay posts, but much is hidden internally and externally. Service range gutted by previous landlord. 17th century extension and 18th century expansion as coaching inn, including Listed cottage range built from 'hedgerow timbers', a rare sight. Brick coach house to rear. An evaluation was conducted on areas of new build but found no further structures or earlier dating material. |
