Abstract:
Archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was carried out on land to the east of 45/47 Notley Road, Braintree, in advance of proposed residential development at the Riverside Centre. As much of the area has been subject to previous quarrying activity and modern disturbance only Phase 5 of the development was evaluated. A single trench, 27m long by 1.6m wide, orientated north-east/south-west, was excavated within the rectangular footprint of the new build. In the western half of the trench were a series of deep, brick and concrete-walled chambers of modern date that are almost certainly associated with the former use of the site as a water works. These structures are likely to have truncated any earlier remains in the western half of the site. Extending beyond the easternmost wall of these structures was a large iron pipe in a well-defined construction trench. The pipe construction trench cut an extensive layer of orangey brown sandy gravel which contained finds broadly dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. Beneath was a thick deposit of dirty brown clay within which fragments of peg-tile and decomposed animal bone were observed. This deposit was about 0.7m thick and overlay cleaner (possibly natural) orange clay at a depth of 1.6m below existing ground level. This considerable depth of deposits is unusual and implies an element of infilling or levelling of this area in the later post-medieval period perhaps after an episode of quarrying.
