Abstract:
Excavation of a long-standing gap site to the rear of the Jury's Inn Hotel, Jeffrey Street, between Chalmer's Close and North Gray's Close. Medieval remains include pits and midden deposits, probably situated within open backplots. An early phase of buildings probably dating to the late 16th or early 17th century included finely built cellars, a kiln or oven and evidence for ironworking. Major redevelopment followed demolition and backfilling of cellars in the early/mid 18th century. A tannery established in the early 19th century expanded over much of the west half of the site from the 1860s. Redevelopment in other areas at a similar date followed the establishment of the railways and the insertion of Jeffrey Street.
